About the Issue

This issue takes inspiration from what cannot be explained by science or the laws of nature. It looks at things brought into being by magic, God, ancestry, ritual, memory, and forces beyond the physical realm. In a world that often prioritises proof and logic, this issue makes space for faith, intuition, mystery, and personal truth.
We invited African photographers to submit bodies of work exploring what spirituality means to them. Beyond established religious practices, we were especially interested in work engaging with African spirituality, Indigenous belief systems, and pre-colonial cosmologies. Supernatural creates space for both the seen and the unseen, the divine and the mysterious. It allows photographers to confront inherited fears, question colonial erasures, and reclaim spiritual narratives on their own terms.

Photographers featured include Apah Benson, Sibusiso Motlwantwa, Aurelie Tiffy Ouiam Akchar, Djibril Drame and Bubu, Otome Ono-Kajogbola, and Kwasi Darko.
